Support & About

Governance & visitor care.

What this website can verify, what Society staff must confirm, and how to raise a safety, access, privacy, collections, or historical-record concern.

Verified institution

Use the exact organization identity.

Public contact

Director Lois Miller is the identified public contact for the Society. Contact staff to confirm current officers, board members, meeting information, authorized representatives, or the correct recipient for a formal request.

Legal and charitable records

A West Virginia corporate record gives March 27, 1975 as the nonprofit corporation's effective date. An IRS letter dated June 1, 2005 confirms Section 501(c)(3) exemption, public-charity treatment, and deductible contributions as stated in that correspondence. Use the exact legal name and EIN above in the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search ↗ to verify current federal status.

Founding and incorporation are different

The Society reports 1957 as its founding date; the supplied state corporate record supports a 1975 incorporation date. Until the originating 1957 record is cited, treat 1957 as the Society-reported date rather than an independently verified archival conclusion.

Governance transparency

Ask for the current, approved record.

The supplied constitution and bylaws copy shows amendments through May 28, 2013. It does not establish that no later amendments exist. This website does not publish an unverified board roster, that bylaws scan, meeting schedule, annual report, or other controlled governance record as though it were the current approved version. Contact the Society for the authoritative record and effective date.

For governance records or the correct organizational contact, email the Society with a specific request. Do not send Social Security numbers, financial-account details, medical information, or other unnecessary sensitive data.

Before a visit or program

Confirm conditions with a person.

  • Call before traveling to confirm current hours, admission, building access, parking, restrooms, seating, sensory conditions, and available assistance.
  • School, youth, and group organizers should use the tour request so staff can discuss capacity, adult supervision, accessibility, arrival, and emergency arrangements.
  • Self-guided routes and map points do not grant access to private property, closed buildings, railroad property, industrial sites, cemeteries, or unsafe terrain.
  • This website does not replace responsible adult supervision, posted rules, weather checks, traffic awareness, or instructions from site staff and emergency personnel.
Safety, access, privacy & conduct

Use the right path for the urgency.

Immediate danger

For an emergency or immediate threat, call 911. Do not rely on email, a website form, or social media for emergency response.

Non-emergency concern

Email the Society or call (304) 425-9017. Include the date, place, and assistance requested. Share only the personal information needed for staff to respond.

Suspicious website or payment request

Send the complete URL and observation time to MCHS privately. Do not enter a password, recovery code, card number, or bank information, and do not attempt to attack the suspected site. MCHS preserves technical evidence before requesting removal or escalation.

Official release identity

The website publishes a machine-readable deployment revision at data/deployment.json. That revision supports release verification but is not proof that an unrelated domain is authorized. Confirm unusual payment or account instructions directly with the Society.

Public-history accountability

Evidence, dignity, rights & correction.

The Society's Website Standards explain source hierarchy, corrections, rights and reuse, living-person privacy, culturally sensitive records, accessibility, maps, and AI limits. To challenge an identification or historical claim, send the page, exact statement, proposed correction, and supporting source. Staff should preserve the evidence and distinguish verified fact, interpretation, tradition, and unresolved claims.
